Do you Shop Black Friday or Cyber Monday?

Statistics say there’s a good chance you do. According to the National Retail Federation, the most popular shopping day is Black Friday, when three in four Thanksgiving weekend shoppers plan to visit a store or retail website.

Why is Black Friday so popular? The short answer is because it’s the traditional kickoff day for the holiday shopping season. Historically, it’s also been the best day to find great deals. You don’t have to look any further than our Black Friday deal this year of 21% off custom button pins & fridge magnets (qtys. of 500 or less).  This is our biggest discount ever for Black Friday days of November 25, 26, 27 & 28.for orders online only at www.custombuttons.com

This holiday shopping event is great for budget-conscious shoppers for family & friends holiday stuffers, to express yourself or for small business to Pin One On an Employee to increase sales or brand awareness this holiday season..

History of Black Friday

The earliest known use of “Black Friday” to refer to the day after Thanksgiving occurred in the journal, Factory Management and Maintenance, for November 1951, and again in 1952. Here it referred to the practice of workers calling in sick on the day after Thanksgiving, in order to have a four-day weekend.

Fixing the Holiday Shopping Calendar

When President Abraham Lincoln issued the proclamation establishing Thanksgiving in 1863, he decreed the holiday would fall on the last Thursday of November. And it did until 1939 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order to move Thanksgiving to the fourth Thursday of November. Congress passed legislation to make the change official in 1941.

Why did Roosevelt move Thanksgiving one week earlier, and why did Congress acquiesce to the change? Because a powerful coalition of retailers and other business interests asked them to.

By this time, the holiday shopping season was synonymous with the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas. When Thanksgiving fell on November 30, as it did in 1939, that left only 24 holiday shopping days – and sometimes fewer, as many stores closed on Sundays back then. Naturally, this worried retailers and retail-adjacent businesses, who reasoned that busy holiday shoppers would simply shop less in a shorter season.

Their pitch to Roosevelt was more egalitarian: A longer holiday shopping season would be good for the American economy. That sounds dubious, but remember that the United States was still struggling to shake off the aftereffects of the Great Depression back in the late 1930s.

Whatever the idea’s economic merits, Roosevelt was sold, and the day that would later be known as Black Friday marked the official start of the holiday shopping season.

Me & the Bees & Buttons are a Natural Fit

Me & the Bees Lemonade & Buttons Working Together

In the years following a then 9-year-old Mikaila Ulmer’s $60,000 investment win on NBC’s ‘Shark Tank’, she’s become one busy little bee with her company Me & the Bees Lemonade est. 2009.

At 13, the young entrepreneur and businesswoman has a hugely successful lemonade company, Me & The Bees, which she started at just four years old after being stung by not just one, but two buzzing bees. To add insult to injury, both stings happened in just one week.

Deciding to learn about bees instead of dismissing the tiny insects and their duel attacks on her skin; Mikaila unexpectedly developed a fascination for them after many hours of research. She discovered that honeybees are essential to the ecosystem and for the pollination of our crops. She also found out that they are under threat of extinction.

This strange coincidence happened while Mikaila was also trying to come up with an idea for the Acton Children’s Business Fair. While still smarting from her bee stings, Mikaila’s Great Granny Helen sent the family an old cookbook from the 1940’s that contained a recipe for Granny Helen’s special Flaxseed Lemonade.

And then an idea was born. Flavoring her granny’s lemonade with honey made by local bees, Mikaila opened her very own lemonade stand to sell her sweet concoction to neighbors, at city events and eventually, a small Austin pizza shop. She decided to donate a portion of her sales to help organizations like the Texas Beekeepers Association, which conduct research into the preservation of bees.

Little by little, Mikaila began to grow her lemonade business until it bloomed into a full-blown company complete with contracts from Whole Foods and United Natural Foods distribution, enabling her lemonade to be sold in nearly 20 states.

All the attention that Mikaila and Me & the Bees received on ‘Shark Tank” after CEO of FUBU clothing, Daymond John, decided to invest in the company for a %25 stake share later led to an invite to the White House for the annual kids’ “state dinner” in 2015 where Mikaila first met then President Barack Obama. She met Obama again in 2016 when she introduced him at that year’s annual Women’s Summit.

In the last year and a half, she has parlayed her rising fame and success into the creation of the Healthy Hive Foundation, became a member of Microsoft’s People of Action network, speaking onstage with Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella at the WE Day Conference in Seattle in 2016, traveled to Cape Town, South Africa to teach a class in Finance 101 and was named one of Time magazine’s “most influential teens” in 2017.

As for 2018, Mikaila will take on a brand new challenge: writing her first children’s book. It will, of course, instruct kids on how to start and run their own businesses.

On March 7th, Mikaila will be speaking at the Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, CA. She will tell her story of bee stings, honey and hard work, called “When Life Gives You Lemons.”

STRATEGIC SHIPPING DURING THE HOLIDAYS

I wanted to mention a few things about shipping during the holiday season. Please avoid waiting until the last minute to place your order. The normal transit times for UPS and USPS are a bit off this time of year, especially with UPS ground and even 3 day select. It seems that both carriers may tack on an extra day to deliver a package. Due to the Black friday and Cyber Monday shopping “spree”, carriers are trying to do a bit of catch up on all the packages that are in transit.

I had a package stuck on a trailer amidst a number of other trailers in VA and it was simply impossible to deliver these buttons before one of the college football games held this weekend. Not to worry.  I simply did a little research on another carrier who could deliver the goods, redid the order and shipped it via FedEx next day air Saturday delivery. Lo and behold, it made it on time. Keep in mind that it may be necessary to switch carriers depending on a number of situational factors.

Apparantly UPS air and intl air packages are guaranteed throughout the holiday season. UPS refers to this concept as the peak season service guarantee. All that means is that they will refund your money on shipping if they don’t honor their intended commitment. With that being said, this means that ONLY next day air and 2nd day air packages are affected. That leaves 3 day select (expedited ground) and ground packages out of the running for being guaranteed this time of year. So no refunds for these latter two methods of shipping.

In conclusion, please be patient with these carriers do to the package surge before the holidays. Even the UPS sales force must work at the hub this time of year. Everyone Loves Buttons is intimately familiar with transit times and is working hard to make sure you get your orders on time. We are spending extra time tracking packages after they leave our facility for added assurance that your buttons arrive promptly.
