A Year in Review 2019 Edition with: Everyone Loves Buttons®

Happy Holidays! Hanukkah has just begun this year, and Christmas is almost upon us. So we wanted to celebrate the holidays with a Year in Review. We wouldn’t be where we are today without our amazing customers and staff. With that, we want to take a look at some highlights of this year and what our plans are for 2020.

2019 Highlights

This year we introduced a new product line, a new size into our product line up, and we went to our first trade show in several years!

Button Boxes

Our newest product line is called Button Boxes. There are three different avenues for this retail product: Custom Button Boxes, Support the Cause FunD Button Boxes, and Stock Button Boxes. Button boxes are the perfect impulse buy at checkout counters, from their button designs to their compact box. Buttons are hot nowadays and people love to express themselves, so what better way then to offer buttons at the checkout counters. From our clients in the Grand Canyon Souvenir Gift Shops to different gift shops in Maine, they have seen great success with their button boxes. People love picking up these little mementos of their time visiting. With Support the Cause FunD boxes, our customers donate a portions of their sales to a charity that is featured on the box. People are happy to donate and have a keepsake of their donation to pin to their hats, jackets, and more. If you aren’t looking for a custom box with your designs, we also offer a line of stock boxes, from locations, to holidays, to even our parental advisory line. Our stock buttons are a fun way for people to express themselves.

2.5 x 3.5” Round Fridge Magnets

Another fun way to express yourself or have a souvenir reminder is to check out our newest fridge magnet size: 2.5 x 3.5” Rounded Corner Rectangles. There is a animation/theme park mogul who has changed their square corner rectangles over to rounded corner rectangles for safety, and we decided to follow suit. The 2.5 x 3.5” rounded corner rectangles are great to feature high quality images like our friends at the Arizona State Parks. They feature different parks on their custom magnets that you can pick up at the different park gift shops!

Las Vegas Souvenir and Resort Gift Show

Gift Shops and retail products is one of the reasons why we decided to attend the Souvenir and Resort Gift Show this year, hosted in Las Vegas, NV. When the final decision was made that we were going to attend, we had just a few short months to prepare ourselves. From planning to packing, to making sure that our show products were made, there was quite a lot to be done. We had to make sure that our marketing materials were eye catching and easy to read. We made sure that we brought along enough product samples, from custom buttons, to button boxes, to fridge magnets. When all of our product samples and marketing materials were made and everything was packed, it was finally time for the show!

We decided to be apart of a program that put retail buyers in front of us for meetings, which allowed us to pitch our product face to face. This allowed us to talk with those individual buyers and found out what their retail needs are. From there, we came up with different products that we thought would do well in their gift shops and retail stores. From this program stemmed organic foot traffic to see what we were all about. Over the course of 4 days we met people from across the United States, and even some from other countries. Each person we met was different from the last, whether they were interested in a particular button box, or wanted to order custom buttons, we were there for them! After the show was over, we packed up the car and drove home to sunny Phoenix, AZ.

Going to the Las Vegas Souvenir and Resort Gift Show was certainly a unique experience for us. We met a lot of people and it was a great way for us to begin a working relationship with different buyers, especially having been able to meet face to face. All in all it was a great show for us to attend and we learned a lot.

2020 New Years Resolution

With 2019 coming to an end, we want to ring in the new year by working on our 2020 New Years Resolution. For 2020, there are a few things that we would like to do:

  • Shine a spotlight on some of our customers each month in the new year
  • Produce over 5 million buttons, clothing magnets, fridge magnets and more in 2020
  • Continue to provide legendary customer service and high quality products
  • Continue to offer our customers constant communication with us from our emails, to phones, to even our chat on our website.

We are constantly working with our customers and staff to be able to provide the best customer service and highest quality promotional products in the industry. We wouldn’t be where we are today without our customers and our staff. To our customers, we wish you nothing but joy as the year comes to an end, and to our staff, thank you for the countless hours and hard work you dedicate to us every day!

For all of your custom button product needs, from custom buttons, to fridge magnets, to clothing magnets, we’re here to help! 5 Ways to Improve Marketing with Custom Buttons

5 Ways to Improve Marketing with Custom Buttons

There are many tips and tricks to improve your marketing strategy from increasing your social presence to focusing on your customers. But what about ways to improve your marketing without having say a word? With custom buttons you can improve your marketing, and this blog will discuss 5 different ways to do so!

A Brief History of Buttons

Since the days of their inception, pin-back buttons have been a huge marketing tool. George Washington’s supporters had brass campaign buttons that said “Long Live The President” in 1789. Later presidential candidates such as John Quincy Adams and Abraham Lincoln won their elections with the use of these effective marketing tools against their opponents. Abraham Lincoln was the first President to have his picture featured on a button. That revolutionized the industry and introduced a new era of pin-back buttons which then included photos and campaign slogans.

Whitehead & Hoag, Founders of Buttons

The pin-back buttons that we see today, however, most closely resemble those produced by Whitehead and Hoag. Whitehead and Hoag are the oldest and largest button company of the early 20th century. They introduced a patented design that featured the use of celluloid over the button’s image to protect the image from age and weather and maintain the vibrant colors of the image. This is how standard buttons got the name celluloid buttons! With this new technique, button making and printing became cheaper which led to toy, candy, and tobacco companies using them as product promotions.

In the 1960s and 1970s, pin back buttons became an effective way to support a cause. Anti-war buttons and peace sign buttons picked up hype and became a huge marketing tool for those people who wanted to express their beliefs. To this day, people of all ages, are creating buttons to express their beliefs or support their causes.

It’s no wonder that buttons have carved a market in the advertising industry, even after being around for the last two centuries.

So let’s take a look on how custom buttons can improve your marketing:

1. Custom Buttons Are Walking Billboards

With custom buttons coming in a variety of different shapes and sizes, it’s no wonder that companies are using them as walking billboards for their customers. Whether it’s the company employee wearing a button advertising a sale, or a customer wearing the button with the company logo, custom buttons are everywhere. We see buttons on t-shirts, travel bags, and even on hats. Great buttons include a colorful design or slogan that attract attention for that company and are great conversation starters.

Check out our sample page here to see different examples of advertising buttons!

2. Cost Effective Method to Promote Your Business

Most button companies, like ours have price breaks for when you are ordering larger quantities. Buttons become cheaper the more that your order and the frequency that you order. Custom buttons are also long lasting handouts that can survive weather, time, and use. We’ve even, by accident, sent some of our own buttons through the washing machine and they’ve survived. So you don’t have to worry about your buttons not withstanding the test of time! By taking time to invest in great marketing materials, you will be able to garner the amount of attention you or your company is looking for!

3. Great Handout at Events and Trade Shows

Everyone loves custom buttons, whether it is at an event or at a trade show. Again, they are cheap item to bring to hand out. They make great mementos for the guests of the show or the event. There is a large audience of people that are moving from booth to booth at such events or shows. With freebies and giveaways, people are more likely to remember your company. People will even seek out your booth specifically because they intend to get the same button they’ve seen someone else wearing.

4. Multiple Custom Button Designs to Track Business Profits

This is geared towards retail stores and restaurants. When you are running different sales or promotions, you can have your employees wear different kinds of buttons. For example, if you have a sale on Women’s clothing and another on technology, you could have two different buttons made up, one for employees in the clothing department, and one for the employees in the technology department. The products are run up at the register and you are able to track the different profits based on which product is purchased. You can also measure using buttons as your silent salesman versus no buttons and see how the sales increase. This ties back into Number 1. Custom Buttons are Walking Billboards.

5. Customization is Key

With pin-back buttons, anything is possible. You could have your brand logo or slogan on a button in a multitude of sizes and shapes. You can also use buttons to promote a new product or an upcoming event. By being able to put whatever you want on a custom button, the sky’s the limit. Custom buttons can come in round, square, rectangular, or even oval forms depending on the needs of your business. They also have no limitation on what you can feature on the buttons from creating a personal memento to advertising different product such as food, clothes, or the latest sale.

Remember not every button manufacturing company is created equal, so it is important to do your research on which company has the best service and quality. By taking time to research various button manufacturers, you can figure out which of them is the right fit for your custom button needs. Remember, paying a little bit extra for a quality button will be well worth it in the long run. It’s always best to compare costs, with production times, along with the quality of the products you are ordering. Make sure to read the customer reviews, and if you have time, even ask for samples before buying!

5 Reasons Custom Buttons are Perfect for Retailers

Custom Buttons are the perfect way to get your brand noticed at the point of purchase. With our wide variety of sizes and shapes, we have the match for your brand or promotional needs. Buttons are known as the “silent salesman”, and our’s have been used to sell everything, from hamburgers, cars, houses, grocery clubs, banks, product specials, and more. Custom Buttons convert your employees and supporters into walking billboards to promote you and your message that’s why they are called the “silent salesman”.

Pins, like the internet, travel fast!

Pin-back buttons are the perfect size to express yourself. Companies love to use them for marketing their brand because they are the ultimate “silent salesman” for employees and are like mini billboards being paraded through town by satisfied customers. And people take them wherever they go, on their backpacks, jackets, hats, and more! What’s a better consumer endorsement than seeing your brand on others?

Pin-Back Custom Buttons are Super Affordable!

Businesses big and small love to purchase pin-back buttons because they are inexpensive and are very effective as the “silent salesman”. In fact, the more you purchase the more money you save. They are also popular with politicians and organizations fighting for a cause because you can hand out hundreds of them at rallies and stay in budget or purchasing as a Fundraising option. An economical choice that produces great results time and time again!

Buttons are a fantastic Emotional Trigger!

All those great memories of days gone by… go through a keepsake box from high school or college and you will likely find a stack of buttons. Pin-back buttons take us back to a simpler place in time. Buttons hold the memories of our first rock concert, campaign election, and our youthful passion we all long for but glad are in the past. These days pin-back buttons can be custom printed to commemorate a birth, anniversary, or class reunion. Buttons have crossed over many genres as they still continue to evolve.

Buttons are timeless.

If you have ever had the pleasure of going to an antique show or state fair, you probably stumbled across some pin-back buttons from years past. Collectors love to assemble a collection of buttons used in promoting products like cigarettes, cereals and gum. Today’s businesses still see the value in advertising their products with buttons because they are in such high demand collectors’ items. The more original and unique the artwork and catchphrase, the better the chances your pin- back custom buttons are to become a timeless piece of advertising history.

Pin-Back Custom Buttons are just plain fun!

Let’s not beat around the bush, pin-back buttons have had such a long life because they are fun for all ages. Whether you are advertising a fast-food chain, fundraising for a worthy cause, and event at your school/university, political candidate, birthday party or just trying to express yourself, pin-back buttons are sure to make us smile. What better way to advertise a product than a with a piece of history that has captivated people for centuries and will continue to do so for centuries to come.

Custom Buttons Design: Color, Image Resolution, and Text

With our custom buttons, you can not only choose your own size and type of backing your buttons will have, you can also submit your own artwork and photos for a button as unique as you are!

Today we are focusing on the most common questions we receive about button colors, image resolution, and text.

Color

Colors help your custom button design stand out from the crowd, and we let you use as many as your heart desires! However, there are some factors to keep in mind when choosing your button colors to help make sure they turn out amazing:

What types of colors can be printed in my button design?

There are two main ways of making color, with light (RGB) and with ink (CMYK). RGB stands for Red-Green-Blue, while CMYK represents the Cyan-Magenta-Yellow-Key (“Key”= black) inks for printing. It is important to know what system your button design is using to create color, as it will effect how your final button design will print!

The first is RGB, and it is used for displaying color on digital screens like computers, smartphones, and television screens. Small LED bulbs behind the screen combine different amounts of red, green, and blue light to produce bright light we see as color. When these three colors of light are combined, they produce white light. This is why so many RGB colors can appear bright and vivid!

When creating a custom button design on your computer, this way of mixing colors is why your design can appear vivid and colorful on a screen.

The diagram above shows how RGB colors combine to form other colors. Because this way of mixing colors involves light, when all three colors are mixed together the result is white.

The second, CMYK, is used for printing and physical objects. Colors are made by combining different amounts of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks. The “K” in CMYK refers to black pigment, or the “key”, for the printing process. Since physical pigments are used to create colors there are limits to how vivid any color can be. Using more of any pigment always results in a darker color.

Because we print out your designs to use them for buttons, we use CMYK colors for every custom button design.

This diagram shows how CMYK colors are combined to create different colors with ink. Unlike RGB colors, mixing all of them creates black.

Can I use Pantone ® colors in my button design?

If you are choosing a Pantone ® color for your button design, choose colors from the Solid +Coated swatch book under the “CMYK” column. Because we print with CMYK inks and not Pantone ® inks we cannot guarantee your buttons will print with the exact color you choose. We will try to make sure your buttons print as closely as possible to the chosen color, but if a match cannot be made our graphics department will work with you to find a solution.

If I am using RGB colors in my design, can I switch to CMYK?

Technically yes, but any colors that are super bright and vibrant (like neon greens, bright oranges, and intense reds) will end up looking different on your buttons than it looks on your screen. This is because even when the color space is changed, your monitor is showing your button design in RGB colors. We recommend making sure your colors are in CMYK so what you are viewing is a closer representation of how your button design will print.

If our graphic designers notice a color they think will print significantly different on your buttons than what you might be expecting, they will notify you via email or on your button proof sheet before sending your design to production.

Image Resolution

This is a bit of a complicated topic, but it is not as scary as it seems! Image resolution is measured in two units: Pixels Per Inch (PPI) and Dots Per Inch (DPI). Digital screens have pixels and work with PPI. Because your screen display has a fixed ratio of pixels a lower resolution image might look exactly the same as a high resolution image.

However, printers use DPI and the differences in resolution will be noticeable. This is because the resolution in this case refers to the number of physical ink dots per square inch. The higher the DPI resolution, the greater the number of ink dots and the clearer your image will appear.

To achieve a clear button image, we recommend having a minimum of 300 DPI for your button designs. However, if your image is pixelated when you send it in, changing the DPI to 300 will NOT fix the pixilation issue.

Another thing to note is if you have a tiny image that is high resolution, making it larger will result in lower resolution images. This is because the amount of pixels in an image will always stay the same, the pixels will only become larger as the overall image becomes larger. Because of this we recommend that any images you use for your custom buttons are larger than the button size you plan on ordering.

Is saving an image with “Web Safe” settings okay for printing?

If you are unsure about what “Web Safe” files are, feel free to skip this section!

For making your buttons, it is generally not a good idea to save your image with web safe settings before sending it to us. Web safe settings are intended for screen viewing, and like we mentioned earlier a computer or phone screen can make it seem like low-resolution images are the same as high-resolution ones. This setting will reduce the overall resolution, making it more difficult to print a high quality image for your buttons.

Can I use a screenshot for my custom buttons?

Using a screenshot on your button will almost always result in a pixelated image, especially on our larger button sizes. With the way computers save screenshot files, we cannot edit them to make them clearer. We highly recommend sending us the original artwork file instead, which should be higher in resolution than a screenshot would be and will print much clearer on your buttons.

My design has a lot of extra space around what I want on my button, should I crop it?

When sending in your button images, always leave extra room around the edges for us to work with. When your images have extra room around the edges, or a “bleed area”, we are able to make sure your design fills the entire button, including the back! If you crop your image before submitting it and you do not have bleed area, harsh edges might appear on the button face.

If you are using our button template to determine design placement, make sure the bleed area of your button design reaches the solid blue line.

Adding Text to Your Buttons

From band names and campaign slogans, to wishing someone a happy holiday, having text on your button is a great way to get your message across clearly and quickly.

Can I send my button design with text already in it?

Yes, however, keep in mind that depending on the type of file your artwork is saved as we might not be able to make any changes to the image you send us.

It is important to note that if you send a file with a font that is not very common, we might not be able to view your entire button design due to a missing font file. If this happens, we will need you to send the font file that was used, outline your fonts, or send your button design as a different file type.

What fonts should I use for my buttons?

The main purpose of text on a button is to share a message with the people around you, so having legible text is very important! While you are free to use any font you have access to for your design, we recommend using fonts that are clear and easy to read for your custom buttons. This is especially true for smaller button sizes, as the smaller button face means your text will also need to be smaller to fit on the visible part of the button. When you are creating your button design, be sure to view the design at an accurate size to have a good idea of the size of the text on your printed button.

What if I have a picture to for my button, but I don’t know how to add text?

Our graphics team will help you find the perfect font and layout for your custom buttons. We recommend looking at different fonts online for inspiration, and letting them know about which fonts you are interested in. If we cannot access the font you would like, we will do our best to find a close match to your desired style.
