Do you Shop Black Friday or Cyber Monday?

Statistics say there’s a good chance you do. According to the National Retail Federation, the most popular shopping day is Black Friday, when three in four Thanksgiving weekend shoppers plan to visit a store or retail website.

Why is Black Friday so popular? The short answer is because it’s the traditional kickoff day for the holiday shopping season. Historically, it’s also been the best day to find great deals. You don’t have to look any further than our Black Friday deal this year of 21% off custom button pins & fridge magnets (qtys. of 500 or less).  This is our biggest discount ever for Black Friday days of November 25, 26, 27 & 28.for orders online only at www.custombuttons.com

This holiday shopping event is great for budget-conscious shoppers for family & friends holiday stuffers, to express yourself or for small business to Pin One On an Employee to increase sales or brand awareness this holiday season..

History of Black Friday

The earliest known use of “Black Friday” to refer to the day after Thanksgiving occurred in the journal, Factory Management and Maintenance, for November 1951, and again in 1952. Here it referred to the practice of workers calling in sick on the day after Thanksgiving, in order to have a four-day weekend.

Fixing the Holiday Shopping Calendar

When President Abraham Lincoln issued the proclamation establishing Thanksgiving in 1863, he decreed the holiday would fall on the last Thursday of November. And it did until 1939 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order to move Thanksgiving to the fourth Thursday of November. Congress passed legislation to make the change official in 1941.

Why did Roosevelt move Thanksgiving one week earlier, and why did Congress acquiesce to the change? Because a powerful coalition of retailers and other business interests asked them to.

By this time, the holiday shopping season was synonymous with the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas. When Thanksgiving fell on November 30, as it did in 1939, that left only 24 holiday shopping days – and sometimes fewer, as many stores closed on Sundays back then. Naturally, this worried retailers and retail-adjacent businesses, who reasoned that busy holiday shoppers would simply shop less in a shorter season.

Their pitch to Roosevelt was more egalitarian: A longer holiday shopping season would be good for the American economy. That sounds dubious, but remember that the United States was still struggling to shake off the aftereffects of the Great Depression back in the late 1930s.

Whatever the idea’s economic merits, Roosevelt was sold, and the day that would later be known as Black Friday marked the official start of the holiday shopping season.

National Button Day

Today is National Button Day and it is a fun holiday to celebrate buttons that are used on clothing, ornamentation, or as fasteners on November 16th. These types of buttons are different from the ones that we manufacture here at CustomButtons.com by Everyone Loves Buttons Inc ®, but we wanted to share because we love all types of buttons!

The first clothing buttons have been found in the Indus River Valley, China, and Ancient Rome. The oldest known button, dating 5000 BCE, was made of curved shell and for in the Indus River Valley.

Buttons that function as fasteners and buttonholes didn’t actually come into popularity until around the 13th Century in Germany. As they gained popularity throughout Europe, button composition reflected the popular materials of the era in which they were made. Today buttons are most often constructed out of hard plastic, metals, seashells, or wood.

Collecting buttons started to become popular in the United States, and from that popularity sprung up The National Button Society, which was founded in 1938. The members vary from people having buttons in containers, casual collecting, and even competitive collecting. The National Button Society focuses on educational research and exhibitions, the publication of materials about buttons, and the preservation of the importance of buttons.

If you’re an avid button collector, you could easily become a National Button Society Member, and even see if there are any button societies in your own state. There are also museums that feature button collections such as The Victoria & Albert Museum, the Smithsonian Museum, the Waterbury Button Museum, the Keep Homestead Museum, and even the National Button Society’s own online button gallery.

To celebrate you could visit a museum, whether in person or virtually, wear something with buttons, share your collection with other enthusiasts, or you can make a craft with buttons.

If you ever need pin-back buttons, wearable clothing magnet buttons, fridge magnet buttons you can check out our samples page for inspiration to create your own custom buttons! We have an in house art department that can help your custom button dreams become a reality, and our sales team is here to answer any questions you may have before, during, or after the ordering process! You can contact us Monday – Friday 8AM – 5PM Arizona Time, by phone (623-445-9975) and by email (sales@custombuttons.com).

Black History Month and Buttons

Black History Month

Along with Valentine’s Day, February is the time of year that America and many other countries celebrate Black History Month. With it’s origins rooted in the 50 years following the abolishment of slavery, Black History Month has come a long way in recognizing the unique achievements of African American people from all around the globe.

It all started in 1915 when famed historian, Carter G. Woodson, and prominent minister and activist, Jesse Moreland, created the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. The organization worked to identify and celebrate the accomplishments of black Americans and their African ancestors. In 1926, the ASNLH proposed the dedication of an entire commemorative week to their cause. The second week February was chosen to recognize what became known as national Negro History week, in honor of the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas.

In the years following the establishment of Negro History week, the event exploded across the country as the mayors of several major cities began designating yearly celebrations to mark the occasion. Nearly 40 years after the initial idea was first proposed, Negro History week had morphed into Black History Month with President Gerald Ford officially recognizing the yearly event in 1976.

In addition to recognizing the contributions of countless African Americans overall, each Black History Month features a specific theme. In 2018, Black History Month will honor “African Americans in Times of War”. It will mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I and highlight the involvement of black soldiers and civilians in all American conflicts from the American Revolution to current standing warfare.

Everyone Loves Buttons client, The NBA’s Golden State Warriors, (@Warriors) have ordered custom buttons to help celebrate Black History Month. The team has organized multiple in-game activities and community outreach efforts along with a T-shirt giveaway for 10,000 fans that took place at the first home game of the month. Every T-shirt and each button carries the phrase, “Black History is Golden”. The Warriors have also teamed up with BAYCAT Academy, a local non-profit that works to educate youth in digital media production, to create a selection of videos highlighting the work of Bay Area leaders and influencers.

You can still order custom buttons for your Black History Month event throughout the end of the month. We can apply any message that you’d like to broadcast to the world in support of the many historical achievements of black Americans or create a more current look with a #blacklivesmatter button or refrigerator magnet.

Visit Everyone Loves Buttons to explore the many ways to show big support with a little button!

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Everyone Loves Buttons®

It’s Valentine’s Day Every February 14th and it marks the day we celebrate with candy, flowers and cards. But how did this holiday come to be? The holiday is credited to Saint Valentine. St. Valentine is rather mysterious in the fact that many are unsure of what occurred during his life. Some say St. Valentine was a priest who arranged marriages in secret. This is because Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage due to married men being “bad soldiers.” Once Claudius found out about what Valentine was doing, he was thrown in jail and sentenced to death. While in jail, Valentine fell in love and gave the girl a letter on the day of his death titled “from your valentine.” The 14th of February is significant because that is the day he was killed.

Others say that St. Valentine tried to help christian s escape harsh Roman prisons. St. Valentine had lots of sympathy for these people because they were frequently beaten and tortured. St. Valentine was rumored to have been killed for helping these prisoners.

But how the day became a holiday is a completely different story. Some say every February 14th people commemorate the anniversary of his death. Others say A festival called Lupercalia was started by the Romans. This festival was in the middle of February and marked the beginning of spring. During this festival, boys drew the names of girls from a box. That name would be the boys girlfriend for the festival.

Then the church wanted to make the festival a Christian celebration and decided to combine that with the celebration of Saint Valentine. This name became used more commonly to celebrate the day of love.

While we don’t know the true story behind St. Valentine, Valentine’s Day is still a great time to celebrate love. Many gift their loved ones chocolate, roses and cards. Be unique and buy your loved ones something different, something they can cherish year round.

Show your spirit for Valentine’s Day, Everyone Loves Buttons has a large selection of different Valentines Day buttons. We have many conversation heart buttons that say things like “#Love”, “Be Mine” and “Real <3.” We also have heart eye emoticon buttons that are trendy and perfect for Valentine’s Day. And don’t forget to show your love for others with buttons that say “I ❤ My Kids” and “I ❤ My Dog.” Our specialty is Custom Buttons so if you have an idea, put it on a button!

With Everyone Loves Buttons you can express yourself and show your spirit for Valentine’s Day!
