Learn more about our unique product offering by reading our product descriptions by following the links or reading the product descriptions below.

Traditional Pin-Back Button

The standard backing choice is the pin-back button style, which allows you to wear your custom buttons with the clip of a jewelers pin.

A pin-back button can simply be fastened to a shirt, hat, or bag using the jeweler’s safety pin mechanism. Cool fact, the first design for a pin-back button was patented in 1896. Modern buttons are modeled after that patent in very much the same way! Patent holders, Whitehead and Hoag said, “My present invention has reference to improvements in badges for use as lapel pins or buttons, or other like uses, and has for its primary object to provide…a novel means for connecting the ornamental shell or button to the bar or pin for securing the badge to the lapel of the coat.”

While pin-back buttons may not seem like much of an invention, in 1896, zippers hadn’t even been invented! Early campaign buttons had to be sewn onto the lapel or worn as a pendant. So the pin-back button was quite the revolutionary product.

Today, the pin-back buttons is the most cost effective option for those who are on a budget. From sizes starting at 7/8” all the way to 6” with rectangles, squares, and ovals in between, there is a button size and shape for every need! To order standard pin-back buttons, click here!

Clothing Magnet

If you’d rather your buttons not poke holes in your clothes, the bar magnet is a great choice! This small, powerful magnet is a fantastic backing option for larger buttons that might stretch clothes if they were attached with a pin. This back is also a great option for places that want to reuse their custom buttons amongst employees, or have a lot of buttons to choose from.

For instance, a fast food restaurant might order their custom buttons with a bar magnet, and just keep them all in a drawer in the main office. Employees can easily swap out the buttons each shift without poking dozens of holes in their uniforms. Our clothing magnets come in two different sizes, a small round magnet and a bar magnet.

Depending on the size of the buttons that you order is what size clothing magnet will be used for your order. Both are powerful magnets and even stick to magnetic or metal surfaces like refrigerators! To order clothing magnets, click here!

Bulldog Clips

Bulldog clip backs look a lot like badge clips. The bulldog clip is attached to the back of the button and can easily be clipped onto a lapel or pocket so you don’t have to push a pin through your shirt. Bulldog clips are also great for attaching ID tags to lanyards. To order bulldog clips, click here!

When choosing how your employees or customers are going to wear your buttons you have to figure out how they will be wearing them. If they will constantly be removing and putting the button back on, a bar magnet or bulldog clip fastener is probably a better choice because those won’t poke holes in their clothes. However the downside to those types of backings is, they can be a little more expensive, so if you are designing your custom buttons on a budget the traditional pin-back button style might be a better choice.

Other Backing Options

Other than the standard pin-back buttons, clothing magnets, and bulldog clip backing options, we also have Zipper Pulls®, Fridge Magnets, Bottle Openers, and Mirror Backs. These backing types have some limited size options due to how they are made.

Zipper Pulls®

Zipper Pulls® are a 1” or 1.25” button that has a backing that allows it to be clipped to a zipper. They are an advertising tool for a variety of industries including sports teams, ski resorts, schools, trade shows, and more! They are a great way to show off your brand or create awareness. To order Zipper Pulls®, click here!

Fridge Magnets

Fridge magnets are a way to show off your custom button designs on the refrigerator or a metal surface. The custom button magnets are made using the same production process, however the backing type parts are different. Fridge magnets use a flat back metal part or an unpinned back (depending on the size of the magnet button). This type of magnet is stronger and longer lasting than the flexible fridge magnets you would normally see. To order fridge magnets, click here!

Bottle Openers

Bottle Openers come in one size currently, the 2.25” round. The backing is a black polypropylene plastic with a metal bottle opener. It also has a magnet to either hang your bottle opener up while it’s not in use or catch the bottle cap when opening the bottle! Bottle openers are great for breweries, gifts, or even advertisements for beverage companies! To place an order for bottle openers, click here!

Mirror Backs

Mirror Backs, like the bottle openers, come in one size the 2.25” round. They have a mirror on the back and your custom design on the front! They are great for people on the go.  It is compact enough to carry it in your purse or your makeup bag. So, you will never be without a mirror again. You can order mirror backs here!

Do you Shop Black Friday or Cyber Monday?

Statistics say there’s a good chance you do. According to the National Retail Federation, the most popular shopping day is Black Friday, when three in four Thanksgiving weekend shoppers plan to visit a store or retail website.

Why is Black Friday so popular? The short answer is because it’s the traditional kickoff day for the holiday shopping season. Historically, it’s also been the best day to find great deals. You don’t have to look any further than our Black Friday deal this year of 21% off custom button pins & fridge magnets (qtys. of 500 or less).  This is our biggest discount ever for Black Friday days of November 25, 26, 27 & 28.for orders online only at www.custombuttons.com

This holiday shopping event is great for budget-conscious shoppers for family & friends holiday stuffers, to express yourself or for small business to Pin One On an Employee to increase sales or brand awareness this holiday season..

History of Black Friday

The earliest known use of “Black Friday” to refer to the day after Thanksgiving occurred in the journal, Factory Management and Maintenance, for November 1951, and again in 1952. Here it referred to the practice of workers calling in sick on the day after Thanksgiving, in order to have a four-day weekend.

Fixing the Holiday Shopping Calendar

When President Abraham Lincoln issued the proclamation establishing Thanksgiving in 1863, he decreed the holiday would fall on the last Thursday of November. And it did until 1939 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order to move Thanksgiving to the fourth Thursday of November. Congress passed legislation to make the change official in 1941.

Why did Roosevelt move Thanksgiving one week earlier, and why did Congress acquiesce to the change? Because a powerful coalition of retailers and other business interests asked them to.

By this time, the holiday shopping season was synonymous with the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas. When Thanksgiving fell on November 30, as it did in 1939, that left only 24 holiday shopping days – and sometimes fewer, as many stores closed on Sundays back then. Naturally, this worried retailers and retail-adjacent businesses, who reasoned that busy holiday shoppers would simply shop less in a shorter season.

Their pitch to Roosevelt was more egalitarian: A longer holiday shopping season would be good for the American economy. That sounds dubious, but remember that the United States was still struggling to shake off the aftereffects of the Great Depression back in the late 1930s.

Whatever the idea’s economic merits, Roosevelt was sold, and the day that would later be known as Black Friday marked the official start of the holiday shopping season.

How to Make Your Own Buttons

Pin-back buttons have been around for a very long time, and are the perfect accessory for expressing yourself. Show off your treasured photos, display your support for special causes, or even share your favorite phrases with the world. But did you know you can make your own buttons?

With some creativity and the right tools, you can turn your idea into a customized button to wear and share with others!

Materials for Making Your Own Buttons

The first step to button making is gathering all the supplies you will need, and making sure you have enough to make your buttons. You will need:

Materials to make a button: a hand machine, scissors, mylar sheet, printed design, button shell, and button backing
  1. A button press
  2. Scissors
  3. Circular mylar sheets
  4. Your button design graphic
  5. Steel button shells
  6. Steel button back with pin inserted

A quick note about the button press: we will be focusing on using a manual hand-press for this tutorial. Although the general process might be similar, electronic button presses will have different operating instructions. Make sure to consult any instruction manuals before making your buttons.

Designing Your Buttons

To make your button customized, you need to have a design! You can put just about anything on a button, from your favorite photos to personal logos, phrases, and more.

When you are making your design, always keep your button size in mind. Small buttons are perfect for simple designs, while larger buttons have more space and can show more complicated details.

Button Design Templates

Once you have your design idea, the next step is to find a template to use. Templates are great for making sure your design idea will work for your buttons, without making a lot of test buttons.

We offer free button templates on our website, and even have a helpful tutorial for how to use them (plus some design tips from our Graphics Department).

Printing Out Your Button Design

Once you are happy with your button design, it is time to print! In the design program of your choice, put as many of your button layouts as you can comfortably fit. Leave some space between each layout, as this will help with cutting them out.

Next, check that your design program and printer settings will have the design printing at the full 100% size before printing. This is very important, as altering the size can cause the final printed design to not fit in your button press.

Button design templates on a printed sheet of paper

Then print out your button designs, with a few extra just in case!

Cutting Out Your Button Design

After your designs are all printed, it is time to trim them for use with your button press. Using your scissors, carefully cut out the design using the outer line of our template as your guide. Make sure to trim the graphics as accurately as possible, as it will help keep your design centered in the press.

Cut out the printed design with scissors

Once all your button designs are all trimmed, it’s finally time to press your buttons!

Using a Hand Press to Make Your Own Buttons

Gather all your button materials listed above, and organize your working area for button making. We recommend having separate areas for your parts and the completed buttons.

What is a Hand Press?

A button hand machine

A button hand press is a manual machine for making buttons, with no electronic parts. The press mainly consists of a stable base, swinging “arms” with slots for the button parts, and a lever that is pulled to physically press the button parts together.

The different slots of a button machine, slot one on the left and slot two on the right

Although it looks complicated, these button presses are actually very easy to use. Because of how the slots are shaped only certain parts can fit each slot, which helps with keeping track of the arm positions. One slot will have a deep circle-shaped groove (seen on the left in the above image, this is considered the first slot), while the other is overall deeper and does not have a groove (seen on the right, this is the second slot).

Pressing the First Half of Your Button

Placing the button shell piece in the hand machine

Make sure the first slot (with the circle-shaped groove) is in the very front of the machine, which will help us with aligning the design graphic. First place the button shell in the circle-shaped groove in the slot.

Placing the printed graphic in the hand machine

Next, carefully place your button design graphic so the “tick” mark at the top is centered. This makes sure your design will have the correct orientation for your finished buttons.

Placing the mylar sheet on the printed design in the hand machine

Finally, place a mylar circle on top and rotate the machine’s arms so the parts you just placed are inside the press.

Firmly pull down on the press lever until you reach the bottom, and then push it back upright after a few moments. This first press combines the steel shell, printed design, and mylar circle together. The button is now halfway done!

Finishing Your Buttons

Button backing piece placed into second slot of button hand machine

Place the button backing part (the one with the pin inserted) into the second slot with the pin facing down and horizontal. You should see the wavy part of the pin (this sits inside the completed button, to keep the pin stable) when the part is sitting in the slot. This makes sure the pin is horizontal on the final buttons, and can be used to wear it once finished.

Next swing the arm the opposite way to be in the press. Don’t worry about not seeing the first part that you pressed earlier! The button press lifts up the first part so it can be pressed onto the second part.

What the finished button looks like after pressing

Pull down on the button press’s lever again, and lift once a few moments pass. Swing the arm around one final time, and you should now see the completed button in the slot.

Repeat these steps as many times as you want until you reach the number of completed buttons you need, and enjoy your customized buttons!

Covid-19 vaccine buttons

Covid-19 Vaccinated Buttons

Have you noticed how quickly the messages we share have changed during the current pandemic? We definitely have! Our owner was interviewed by Channel 12 News to talk about her experience with making custom buttons during the pandemic. Watch the video below to hear about the newest messaging trend, Covid-19 vaccinated buttons:

Throughout the current pandemic we have been proud to be able to make buttons with informative and positive messages for essential workers and the public. Today we talk about the top Covid-19 related button trends we have seen, and how you can order your own customized buttons and stickers!

Covid-19 Safety Customized Buttons

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused many changes in the messages we want to share with the each other. This is especially true as new information quickly emerged about the virus. Most notable were the different public safety measures that have been needed and how to remind others to follow these safety practices. Healthcare and public safety were the most popular topics for customized buttons over the past few months, with most designs falling into the following three categories.

Hand Washing Buttons

Covid-19 button designs about washing your hands and staying six feet away

One of the first trends to emerge were buttons and magnets focused on washing hands to stop the spread of the virus. These buttons have been used to remind others to always use soap and be through. This message emerged as officials said it could help keep you safe after touching surfaces.

Hand washing icons and bold text were mainly used to grab the attention of others. These layouts influenced other button designs, as they were easy to understand and read from a distance.

Social Distancing Buttons

Button designs with a social distancing message

This topic quickly became one of the most popular during the pandemic, and continues to be important as the pandemic continues. Small businesses, restaurants, and healthcare facilities used buttons with this message to remind others about their new social distancing practices.

Customized buttons and pins proved to be a great way of encouraging social distancing from the recommended six feet. Our 3” buttons were the most popular, as large bold text and logos fit perfectly on the larger buttons we carry.

Mask Wearing Buttons

Blue button with the text "I'm smiling under this mask"

Throughout the pandemic, mask wearing buttons were definitely the most popular designs for our customers. These buttons served to remind customers, employees, and patients about wearing a mask to stop the spread of the virus. Our larger buttons kept their bold mask-related designs large enough to see even while social distancing.

Mask wearing also brought a new challenge to how people expressed themselves: how can you show emotions without showing your full face? Our creative customers found the perfect solution with buttons, by using designs about smiling!

Covid-19 Vaccine Buttons

Covid-19 vaccine buttons

With several vaccines now approved and beginning distribution across the country, the newest trend to emerge is Covid-19 vaccinated buttons. These buttons tell others that you have now received the vaccine.

Currently these buttons are mainly used by healthcare and essential workers to let patients know they are vaccinated against the virus. However, as more of the public becomes eligible to receive the vaccine we anticipate more people wanting to show their vaccinated status.

Official Designs by the Center for Disease Control for Healthcare Workers

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) is working to make it easy for healthcare workers to let others know when they have been vaccinated with their official Covid-19 vaccinated button and sticker designs. With two color options, these designs are perfect for making buttons and stickers and are easy to identify from a distance.

The Importance of Covid-19 Buttons and Stickers

Our pin-back buttons and clothing magnets are the perfect choice for employees and healthcare workers to show their vaccinated status on a daily basis. Buttons are reusable and feature a clear protective mylar covering over your design. This allows you to properly sanitize your buttons, without compromising the design!

What is The Daily Bread Watch?

The Daily Bread Watch (TDBW) is an online platform bringing news to high school and college students that allows them to think about what they are reading and how it shapes their daily lives. Each day different news articles are chosen by fellow students and teachers. These articles each have a brief introduction into the article with an engaging question for the reader to consider before continuing to read the full article. Once the reader has finished the article, they can post on the blog and read what others around the country have also thought about the story.

TDBW was created by a high school business/marketing teacher to help make talking about daily news stories more engaging to high school and college students. He noticed his students were not excited to find and read about the news during their daily bell-work, and set out to create a fun and entertaining way to encourage research and  discussion about current events.

What is in The Daily Bread Watch?

TDBW is delivered to students daily via email and is laid out into sections, starting with the stock market recap that provides an explanation of what happened in the market the day before, and what to expect for the upcoming day.

Full Loaf logo

The Full Loaf includes three to four daily headline stories.

Half Loaf logo

The Half Loaf is a short student written article (or two) about a current topic happening in the news. It then asks a thought-provoking question to promote higher level thinking and discussion among students.

Slice logo

A Slice of Bread includes three to five news topics with a take on the stories by our readers.

Bread Crumbs logo

The Bread Crumbs includes a look back at a news story occurring on that day exactly one year ago, and encourages reflection on how the event affected them while it occurred versus their opinion in the present day.

The format of TDBW is a great choice for bell-work or assignments in a discussion board (like Canvas or a similar LTM). Students will have new topics every day to discuss and respond to, encouraging them to stay engaged in the news. This not only helps them broaden their vernacular and though processes, but it also allows them to explore new ideas and examine how their lives can be impacted.

The Most Famous Political Campaign Button

Some people collect stamps or coins, while others invest in baseball cards or Barbie® dolls. But there is also a whole world of collectors whose item of choice is the political campaign button. One appraiser said that political buttons are like a “microcosm of political history for the 20th century”, with many treating them with the same reverence given to the first American flags, the Declaration of Independence, and other artifacts from America’s past. It does not matter if you are a Democrat, Republican, or Independent, campaign buttons are invaluable pieces of American history.

Early Political Campaign Buttons

George Washington wore the first political button, a clothing button made of brass, in 1789 at his first Presidential inauguration with the phrase “G.W.-Long Live the President.” The slogan was based off the British’s Long Live the King cry. An original George Washington cloth button could now easily be worth tens of thousands of dollars.

In 1860, Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin ran for the Presidency. Many believe that Lincoln was the first president to use buttons as a true campaign tool. Political button pins during this era started to feature daguerreotypes of the candidates and is the first time portraits ever appeared on campaign buttons. One of these buttons, in perfect condition, would be worth over $1000 to most modern collectors.

The first mass production of metal buttons, the design we are familiar with today for most campaigns, happened during the 1896 William McKinley campaign for president. These campaign buttons were “celluloid” buttons, with one side of a metal disk covered with paper containing the printed message, and protected by a layer of clear plastic.  It’s ironic that campaign button pins haven’t changed much over the years; political buttons are still produced with a metal casing, covered with paper and protected by clear plastic we call mylar. The only difference is that we now have a jewelers safety pin attached to the button back.

One of the most famous uses of campaign buttons occurred during the 1940 U.S. presidential election, when Wendell Willkie’s campaign produced millions of buttons in response to news stories about President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It reads: “That’s right Franklin, Spinach is Spinach”. According to NPR, this button can be traced back to a New Yorker cartoon, where a mother and daughter are sitting around a dinner table. The mother says “It’s broccoli, dear”, while the daughter pushes away the plate and responds, “I say it’s spinach and I say the hell with it.” This is to suggest Willkie’s nature it to “tell it like it is”, while Roosevelt is guilty of spinning the truth.

Political Campaign Button Prices

Aside from the Washington button, the price of past campaign buttons doesn’t always rise in relation to its age. Some of the most popular buttons have sentimental value attached to them, such as buttons created for the Kennedy Presidential campaign. “A Kennedy-Humphrey button can be worth $300-$500. This outranks even Lincoln, Roosevelt and Huey Long memorabilia,” said collectibles writer Joyce Worley. Obviously the more obscure buttons, such as those with spelling errors, are considered more collectible simply because they are harder to come by.

“Since the turn of the century, the political button has just dominated the political advertising, until television came in. Now it’s a dying art.” Political campaign button collectors are hoping to preserve the art and the history that is inherently a part of those buttons for generations to come. Whether it’s for President, Governor, Mayor or local election campaign, button pins will stand the test of time.

Showing support (or disdain) for presidential candidates through button pins is a practice nearly as old as the office of the 1st U.S. President George Washington, and over time it has evolved with the changing political landscape we are living in today.  Campaign Button Pin history may be hundreds of years old, but still remain wearable signs of the times.  Even today’s COVID-19 themed campaign buttons will become part of a collection one day.

Button pins are now making a comeback as they can be seen from a safe 6 foot distance and can be customized to your needs. Who knows, the buttons we make for you might become collectable 100 years from now!
