National Button Day

Today is National Button Day and it is a fun holiday to celebrate buttons that are used on clothing, ornamentation, or as fasteners on November 16th. These types of buttons are different from the ones that we manufacture here at CustomButtons.com by Everyone Loves Buttons Inc ®, but we wanted to share because we love all types of buttons!

The first clothing buttons have been found in the Indus River Valley, China, and Ancient Rome. The oldest known button, dating 5000 BCE, was made of curved shell and for in the Indus River Valley.

Buttons that function as fasteners and buttonholes didn’t actually come into popularity until around the 13th Century in Germany. As they gained popularity throughout Europe, button composition reflected the popular materials of the era in which they were made. Today buttons are most often constructed out of hard plastic, metals, seashells, or wood.

Collecting buttons started to become popular in the United States, and from that popularity sprung up The National Button Society, which was founded in 1938. The members vary from people having buttons in containers, casual collecting, and even competitive collecting. The National Button Society focuses on educational research and exhibitions, the publication of materials about buttons, and the preservation of the importance of buttons.

If you’re an avid button collector, you could easily become a National Button Society Member, and even see if there are any button societies in your own state. There are also museums that feature button collections such as The Victoria & Albert Museum, the Smithsonian Museum, the Waterbury Button Museum, the Keep Homestead Museum, and even the National Button Society’s own online button gallery.

To celebrate you could visit a museum, whether in person or virtually, wear something with buttons, share your collection with other enthusiasts, or you can make a craft with buttons.
