Happy Pride Month!

This June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month (LGBT Pride Month). Pride Month is celebrated every year due to the Stonewall riots in Manhattan. The Stonewall riots in Manhattan occurred in 1969 when Police raided a Gay Club called the Stonewall Inn. This raid became violent when patrons and local sympathizers began rioting against the police. While this police raid was completely legal because the club had been selling alcohol without a license, New York’s gay community started noticing the police targeting gay clubs. A month after the riots, one of the first public marches occurred in New York City where LGBT people proudly claimed their identities. This was called the Christopher Street Liberation Day March. This March inspired other cities around the world to hold LGBT marches.

Gay Pride day was originally celebrated the last Sunday in June, however the actual day was very flexible. Soon, Gay Pride became a month long series of events. Now, we celebrate gay pride month with parades, parties, picnics, and concerts. Currently, LGBT Pride Month has millions of participants, all around the world. There are also memorials held during Pride Month for people who have died of HIV/ Aids or hate crimes. The purpose of Pride Month is to recognize the impact LGBT individuals have had on history and to improve the visibility, acceptance and legal protections for LGBTQ people. Pride Month also recognizes gay pride, a movement that celebrates lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. It promotes their dignity, equal rights and makes society more aware of the challenges they face.

Another important person to recognize is the “Mother of Pride” Brenda Howard. Howard was a bisexual activist and feminist. Howard was born in the Bronx and had a passion for activism and was involved in anti-war and feminist movements. Howard also knew many people who were in the Stonewall Inn while the riots took place. Throughout her life, Howard stood for those who had their rights trampled on and was a voice for all minorities. Howard was also arrested several times for protesting, but never gave up. Howard even died during New York’s pride week due to cancer.

Pride Month is being celebrated worldwide. While many cities are celebrating by having pride festivals, some are even having gay ski week and gay cruises. During pride festivals, people usually dress in wild and unique costumes. If you are going to a gay pride festival, it is recommended that you bring: sunscreen, plenty of water, a rainbow flag, a positive sign, and an excited attitude. This will help you have the best experience at a Pride Festival.

Here at Everyone Loves Buttons we wish those who celebrate pride month to have a great and uplifting experience!
