Charly Weger and snowboarder/photographer friend Andrew Hourmont started the Air + Style Contest in Innsbruck, Austria in 1993. They only expected some hundred spectators but more than a few thousand showed up to see one straight jump from each rider. From that time, the contest has become one of the spectacular snowboard events today, celebrating its 20
th birthday. All Air + Style contests are part of the World Snowboard Tour which is regarded as the highest ranked 6 star event.
Air + Style events were also held in
Munich,
Seefeld and
Beijing. Over 500,000 spectators have attended these snowboarding contests during the course of 20 years. Winning an Air + Style is prestigioius and only the top snowboarders including Terje Haakonsen, Shaun White, Kevin Pearce, Travis Rice and Mark McMorris have competed and won.
In 2014,
Shaun White became the majority shareholder of the Air + Style Company. Now the 2014-15 season includes a globa tour which include Beijing, Innsbruck and Los Angeles. Shaun wanted to bring the contest closer to home and the Los Angeles event will be held in Pasadena, CA. He will host this snowboard and freeski (skiiers were previously never allowed into an Air + Style event) event in February 2015 and will also be part of the music festival. It is sure to be a big success.
